The TX3 is among the newest wave of Android TV boxes available on the market. It features cost effective yet powerful processors, sleek design and an updated version of Android. This combination of power, design and stat of the art operating system make it a must have for the entertainment lover.
The TX3 Android box comes with the new quad core Amlogic S905X processor. The S905X processor is a lower cost version of the Amlogic S905 chip. It operates on a lower frequency, but still packs plent of punch, allowing you to watch in 4K Ultra-high resolution. While it doesn’t have the same processing power of the S905, it still performs exceedingly well, surpassing performance grades of other boxes. Plus it adds the benefit of helping keep the price low for consumers.
Although it only has 1G ram, running on Android Marshmallow will ensure that you get optimum performance out of the box. It must be reinforced that Ram has little bearing on speed. The Ram only affects the number of processes running simultaneously. The more Ram the more apps you can have running at once. You can buy a slow box with 16G Ram and it will still be a slow box. This isn’t a slow box.
Android 6.0 Marshmallow
It would come as no surprise to most that operating systems get updated very frequently. Heck, I still feel like Windows 95 was only 5 years ago. And with every update comes new features, better usability and ultimately a larger range of compatible programs and apps. Android Marshmallow brings to the table refinements and extensions of the popular Lollipop operating system. It has allowed for better power and RAM management by reducing background activity and introduced a range of better and easier to use permissions. The result is a far better user experience.
The beauty of being Android is that it has access to the bountiful Google Play store with hundreds of thousands of available apps. You can download and play a range of record breaking apps on your big screen TV, or you can check in on your favourite social network. But the best is yet to come.
Kodi, Netflix, YouTube, Showbox, TwitchTV , Freeview and more
- Please note. These boxes are not fully loaded and come with the official version of Kodi and only legal streaming apps.
With Kodi you can access the absolute best the world has to offer. You can gain access to worldwide TV, sports and more. Watch some EPL one minute then switch to a different add-on and see what’s happening in Greece with a Greek add-on. You can also access the latest podcasts and radio broadcasts from around the world. The sky really is the limit when it comes to Kodi.
But if you find Kodi a little daunting or difficult to use the box comes with other pre-installed apps for you to enjoy. See the best and worst the world has to offer on YouTube, install catch up local freeview TV apps, install a variety of other IPTV streaming apps such as HBO and Stan and enjoy Netflix (paid subscription may be required for some services).
If playing apps on TV isn’t your thing and you still enjoy the retro gaming experience, you can install the SNES9X app available in the Play Store and get your retro game on. As the name suggests, the app is a Super Nintendo (SNES) emulator. It will play games, installed as roms, on your TV box. The app comes with a free rom to try it out with, and you can find more roms online. You can connect a USB gamepad to the box to get that real retro feel. The games are exactly as you remembered them.
There are only a few limitations, and thankfully they don’t impact all users.
The use of Presto and Stan may be a little cumbersome with these boxes. Presto scores an amazing 1 star in the Play Store, and Stan doesn’t fair much better. Presto blocks users from using the app on a jailbroken, better known as rooted device. To get around this block you will have to install a Play STore app called hide my root. Once the app has been installed and you have clicked on hide SU binary, Presto should work. Sometimes though it won’t. As I said, it’s a pretty bad app. Stan on the other-hand has another problem. It requires a 3G signal or Wi-Fi access to play videos. It didn’t occur to the developers of the app to enable Ethernet connected devices. While the TX3 has Wi-Fi capabilities, Stan needs the signal to be very strong and stable. It will need to be very close to the router for it to work. It really is a hit and miss affair.
Foxtel Go. Foxtel Go will not work on any Android TV box at all. To begin with they have blocked the app from working on rooted devices. Even if you get around this by using hide my root, they then block their streams from being displayed on an external display. This applies to all devices which send a signal to a TV including Chromecasts, mirror casters and airplay devices. Their logic is content licencing. You can be in the same room as your TV watching Foxtel on your phone, but to watch the same program on you TV you have to turn the Foxtel box on. So please do not buy any device to watch Foxtel Go on a TV until Foxtel change this policy.
